Sam Harris, the neuroscientist remember, is so deliberately uninterested and uncurious about determining why people might be driven to an extreme belief such as Islamic Jihadism. For example, at 10:42 they make a remark about how American muslims are less jihadist than muslims in the middle east. And Harris' response was that "it's a happy accident as to how they got here". Is this what passes for critical thinking among America's elite, from this self-described genius atheist? Could it be, perhaps, that American muslims have not been put to the sword, or bomb in the US or Israel's case, quite as much as muslims in the middle east? All you Israel supporters, tell me: what's different between this war, and the Vietnam War? Were the Vietcong not fanatics, extremists? Were they not willing to hide behind civilians? And yet I think we can all agree that fighting the Vietnam War was a gigantic inhuman brutal mistake, that amounted to nothing in the end, except piling up millions of Vietnamese lives and 58,000 US soldiers. I'm sure Sam would think it's just some happy accident that Vietnamese Americans were less militant communist than the Vietcong! The Vietcong were a communist guerilla group that fought against US troops in South Vietnam; their goal was to unite Vietnam under communist rule, following being colonized by first, the French, then Japan, France again and the US. Fighting a guerilla war means hiding amongst civilians, as Mao once said, "the guerrilla must move among the people as a fish swims in the sea." If Sam were to go back in time sixty years, would he be saying that the Vietcong "have to lose"? I'm betting he'd say he believes that Jihadism is some special case, that in hindsight, we should've realized that the war wasn't about communism, that it was really about anti-colonialism. That actually, their demands were completely justified and not worth fighting a brutal unwinnable war over. But someone as high IQ as Sam should be able to apply the same analysis to this war! Could it be that Hamas is extreme because the underlying group of people that Hamas represents has been subjected to extreme conditions for decades? But no, trying to understand the current enemy of US foreign policy is practically treason at this point. Whoever is the target of the American (and let's include Israeli) elite, is the pure definition of evil and they "have to lose". The moment they try and view it from someone else's point of view their brain short-circuits and they repeat the last talking point they heard: human shields, anti-Semitism, condemn Hamas. But most of all that somehow viewing things from the Other's point of view justifies their actions. Seems a little too convenient to me. Who am I to justify anyone's actions? If I am, shouldn't I be more expected to morally justify the brutalities I pay for than the ones that my enemy's do?! Sam is, of course, all too happy to morally justify Israel's brutality, citing October 7, or perhaps the fact that the Palestinians didn't accept whichever "good" deal they were offered back in the 90s. Obviously viewing it from Israel's point of view is effectively required, but if you try and do the same thing to the Palestinians, you're an anti-Semite Jihadist Nazi, whichever bad word from long ago they can come up with to avoid doing any critical thinking. To avoid questioning our elites.

Big fan of the show, and I didn’t care for this woman either. But just to level the playing field here I’ll say that I recently purchased Dan’s book and I’m not too crazy about it. I don’t know if it’s that the characters don’t jump out at me or seem believable, or if it’s the style of writing, or what. At any rate, this is (still), since 10/7, the best show on the Arab-Zionist conflict, and it’s because of the open mindedness of Noam, Dan, and Periel. God bless. And no disrespect, Dan.

Like with BJG... The current issue is putting an extremely hard commitment to the lawyerly style of battle under scrutiny. This is the "pound the table" style of argument... used when other approaches aren't clearly available to or well known by the advocate. It's among the reasons arguing gets such an ugly reputation as super unpleasant.

This process of interrupting not for clarification but just to prevent someone from finishing a point is maddening. It's arguing to obscure and undermine, not to clarify and support better understanding. It's the difference between approaching arguing as almost purely a battle tactic and arguing as significantly a search process.
